Genre Research : Horror and Comedy

Genre: Horror

  •  Common Lighting- Uplighting, Shadow Lighting, and Under Exposure Lighting.
  • Common Camera Angles- Low Angle, Canted/Dutch Angle, and Close-up Angle.
  • Common Movement- Tracking, Handheld, and Pan.
  • Common Mis-En-Scene- Scary costumes, Creepy Settings, Horrific Props, Blunt/Loud acting, and Frightening makeup.
  • Example of films- IT, Annabelle, and Us.
  • Common sounds- Dialogue, Stings, and diegetic sound.
  • The elements we like are the suspense and mystery because that engages the audience and entertained throughout the film. Also, the intense and dramatic background noise/music because it helps create suspension.
  • The elements that do not appeal to us is the predictable and uniformed decisions the characters make like they hear a sound coming from the basement and they go there to see what it is. This usually means the characters are walking towards danger which the audience can expect what is going to happen next.
Horror films are very predictable because they all have to follow a certain format. Researching horror helped Sonali and I to understand the differences between a horror film and other types of films which is why it is important to research. Researching horror clarified and went into to specific details on what makes a film a horror. Horror films set a certain type of mood for their audience to become scared or nervous. For example, horror films use low lighting and frightening props like fake blood or a scary costume. This creates a sense of suspension and anxious feelings. Overall, knowing the difference between horror and other categories is very visibly since horror films follow a certain type of pattern when it comes to making a film horror.

Genre: Comedy
  • The common lighting in comedies is high lighting
  • The most common camera angle is the high and low angle
  • The common movements zoom, reverse zoom, track, and pan.
  • The common Mis-En-Scene is regular clothing, exaggerated acting, and usual setting like a house or at work.
  • The examples of comedy films are Wedding Ringer, Clueless, and The Ugly Truth.
  • The common sounds are dialogue, ambient, sound modif, non-diegetic, and non synchronous.
  • The elements we like is the sarcasm, exaggeration, and farce.
  • The elements that do not appeal to us is the repetition, incongruity, and surprising.
The comedy genre is a very universal genre so research is needed for it. Comedy can seem like other genres like action, horror, etc because it follows no specific or certain pattern. However, comedy films do have distinctive details and it is important to know them to differentiate it from other genres. Sonali and I now know the camera angles, camera movements, sounds, lighting, and Mis-En-Scene which will help us know that a film falls in the comedy genre. For example, in comedy films they use sarcastic dialogue to create a funny scene. This makes the audience laugh and feel at ease because jokes are being made through the sarcastic dialogue. Comedy films usually are humorous, exciting, and engaging towards their audience. Now we can go back to our research and use it as a reference if we are ever struggling to differentiate between the film genres. Most genres use the same camera movements or lighting but in different ways and that is why it is important to research each genre. Also, researching tells us their reasons behind their use of that certain camera movement or lighting which tells us the difference between all genres.
