Short Film Research- SUBURBIA BY ANTONIO ORENA-BARLIN
The short film plot is very straight to the point and clear. We are not left guessing on what the plot is of this film and did not have to piece it together either. It has most of the common elements of the drama genre. At first the short film starts all happy and gracious. Then, a few minutes into the film chases occurs which is the climax. The key to a dramatic film is the climax and this one was straightforward. The tragic event was a shooting. The film wastes no time to state the plot of the film. More in debt this plot continues on for minutes of the film. You can hear the gun shot noises loud and clear but cannot see them. This means the film is using non diegetic sound. Also, there is a lot of raised voices and screaming occurring. This is a key element in dramas. This is one of the dramatic elements we will use in our short film. Also, these elements are elements we like to see in drama films. The lighting in this film is high key lighting throughout the whole thing which captures the plot and it's effects. Then, when the ambulance comes you can hear the sirens and the guy has a breakdown because they cannot save the woman that was shot. All of this is very dramatic because we still do not know where the shots came from or what caused it. It is a mystery plot to us but still very straight forward on what's the plot. Then, closer to the end of the 13 minutes film the shots stop. The next scene is kind of muted and just blurry sounds and a blur image. The girlfriend of the guy is talking to him but we cannot hear her. This adds a pause to what is occurring in the short film. It is a dramatic effect that conveys the message that something terrible happened or happening. Overall, this short film has the elements that we want to use in our short film so it is a perfect film to research for us.
