Short Film Research - SOFT BY SIMON ELLIS

The short film is very straight to the point with the drama it contains. The climax of the short film is directly and clearly told. It starts off with a fight between high school students just into a minute of the film. The camera quality is low and the camera is being held. The fighting part of the short film looks like it was recored on a phone. There is a lot yelling going on which is the main element of dramas. The other one is there is physical abuse going on between the students. The pushing and punching going on is the physical abuse being referred to. Then, the quality of the short film changes to high and uses high key lighting. The scene where the boy is telling his father he got into a fight is shot at a zoom angle. This captures the emotions of the father which gives a melodramatic feel. This effect contributes to the common elements of drama. Then, an over the shoulder angle occurs which shows the boy's face when his father is speaking to him. This does the same thing as the zoom, it captures the expressions on his face. In addition, it has some of the action genre elements. The combination of both genres makes this short film the perfect one to use a reference for our short film. The next scene where the kids that jumped him is at his house has the most drama and action in it. The kids were on his dad car and set off his car alarm. The father and son are yelling at each other calling each other a "wuss" for not getting them off the car. The car alarm and enhanced noises like a rock being thrown are diegetic sounds. The boy gets tired of waiting and gets a paddle and starts beating the kid with it. This causes total chaos because now the kids that jumped him are scattering and running away from him. This one scene contained the most drama because some much action occurred within it. The boy starts to beat one of the kids with the paddle and steps on his head. This made us gasp because we were not expecting him to become so violent. This was such a surprise to us which is a good element to have in a drama film.
