Short Film Research - SOFT BY SIMON ELLIS

Image
The short film is very straight to the point with the drama it contains. The climax of the short film is directly and clearly told. It starts off with a fight between high school students just into a minute of the film. The camera quality is low and the camera is being held. The fighting part of the short film looks like it was recored on a phone. There is a lot yelling going on which is the main element of dramas. The other one is there is physical abuse going on between the students. The pushing and punching going on is the physical abuse being referred to. Then, the quality of the short film changes to high and uses high key lighting. The scene where the boy is telling his father he got into a fight is shot at a zoom angle. This captures the emotions of the father which gives a melodramatic feel. This effect contributes to the common elements of drama. Then, an over the shoulder angle occurs which shows the boy's face when his father is speaking to h...

Short Film Research- SUBURBIA BY ANTONIO ORENA-BARLIN

Image
The short film plot is very straight to the point and clear. We are not left guessing on what the plot is of this film and did not have to piece it together either. It has most of the common elements of the drama genre. At first the short film starts all happy and gracious. Then, a few minutes into the film chases occurs which is the climax. The key to a dramatic film is the climax and this one was straightforward. The tragic event was a shooting. The film wastes no time to state the plot of the film. More in debt this plot continues on for minutes of the film. You can hear the gun shot noises loud and clear but cannot see them. This means the film is using non diegetic sound. Also, there is a lot of raised voices and screaming occurring. This is a key element in dramas. This is one of the dramatic elements we will use in our short film. Also, these elements are elements we like to see in drama films. The lighting in this film is high key lighting throu...

Short Film Research- I am in the world as free and slender as a deer on a plain (DRAMA)

Image
This short film does not have a lot of the common elements for the drama genre. However, the film has the common editing used in drama films. The short film has low key lighting being used. It uses zoom as one of it's camera angles  in the beginning of the 11 minutes film. It has this upbeat background music playing which adds as a dramatic effect. The costumes were very casual clothing like a blouse and jeans. It did not use none of the key elements that we like. There was no screaming or yelling and no dramatic conflict. The film starts off very confusing though. It shows what looks like someone that is a butcher getting a pig off a table. This start off of the short film does not help to tell the main idea of the film. Also, it does not contribute to the main topic which is a woman seeing multiple men. The short film was just about a girl seeing different guys and so on. She goes about her life day by day in a calming mood. She has...

Short Film Research - Friday Tigers by Aidee Walker (drama)

Image
The short film is almost 17 minutes and the plot is very hard to find out. The film is not very straight forward or clearly states it's plot to the audience. It does not start with any context of what might be the plot. The scenes just go day by day and show what different things occur during the different days. The film never actually goes in debt detail about why something happen or what is the problem. It just shows the aftermath or the effects of the problems occurring in the woman's life. However, since it is drama we were expecting some type of conflict to happen in the short film. The short film consist of many sounds. Background music is played during the beginning of the film. The background music sounds like a person singing with an instrument. The noise of the train moving on the tracks is prominently loud but not too loud. Then, little sounds like the typing to text and other little sounds like that were enhanced. The costumes used for the main cha...

Research : How to make a short film

Image
This informational video helped opened my eyes to more knowledge on how to produce our own film. While watching I noticed I already knew somethings like when they were talking about the creation of films. However, "How to make a short film" video gave a lot of new tips that will help me in the production of our short film journey. The production tips and post production tips in this video were given by a expert in film. One tip that caught my attention is when the expert mentions to not do it if you can’t pull it off. Another tip is that it is key to mess with the audience's mind and emotions. The expert explains that it is either all or nothing and to not do something half or partially. This kind of reminds me of this expression, " Go big or go home". This expression implies it's all or nothing which is why the film expert explanation reminded me of it.  Adding unnecessary things to a scene because it looks like a cool element to your fi...

Comparing Le Jetree, the short, and 12 monkeys, the full length movie

Image
PART ONE- So from the video we learned the 12 monkeys is supposed to be a remake of Le Jetee. However, nothing could ever be recreated the way Le Jetee was. We believe the elements of mis-en scene camera shots and angles were expressed in le jetee that weren't quite the same in 12 monkeys. The information that We gather from this video included the a dispassionate tone carried in Le jette from the film narrator. It added an accentuation in the audio to the rest of the film and images. The exaggerated audio such as percussion sounds and a pounding heartbeat. These tools created a more dreamlike film with the genre being a sci-fi filled film this plot included a mediation of the passage of time. They did this by using closeup shot to exaggerate images and characters faces and emotions expressed throughout the film helped create the dreamlike idea that was portrayed. It gave an outlook on war times before during and after of a war through the life of a man ( a slave) that could trave...

Comparing 9, the short, and the 9 full length movie

Image
The Short: My first impressions of the 9 short film was a bit confusing and when things slowly began to make sense in the end I was left with a weird cliff hanger and although it didn't make much sense seeing the numbers stitched onto other ghost dolls backs before the screen goes out helps establish that there is more to the story and that the is an explanation to the madness I was seeing before me. I couldn't really tell what the plot was in the beginning of the short it was hard to put two and two together but after seeing the  ghost dolls it can an appeal of an post-apocalyptic event that happened with 9 being the only survivor of his kind in the all out war. In the character development you could see that 9 was alert and nervous yet curious to find out whats going on and what he can do to survive. The character built a sense of fight or flight mode during the chaos in the short. I saw that there were lots of special effects i'm not really sure how those effects were ac...

Genre choice for Film

Image
Our short film could fall in many different genres. However, the genre we chose for our short film is drama. The three genres were action, drama, and horror that we were researched. The drama genre was the most accurate genre to describe our short film. Our short film is about a mother being verbally abusive which means a lot of shouting, bullying, and loud noises going on. These are some of the many things that contribute to the drama genre according to our research. The inspiration for our decision is quite simple and obvious. Our inspiration for choosing this genre was our research. We compared all the elements and analyzed all the elements within the genres. Then, we compared that to the elements of our short film and saw the drama genre was the best fit. From the process of researching all three to just choosing one was a learning experience. It shows how much in common film genres have and what sets them so differently from each other. We believe ...

Genre Research - Horror

Image
Genre: Horror    Common Lighting- Uplighting, Shadow Lighting, and Under Exposure Lighting.  Common Camera Angles- Low Angle, Canted/Dutch Angle, and Close-up Angle. Common Movement- Tracking, Handheld, and Pan. Common Mis-En-Scene- Scary costumes, Creepy Settings, Horrific Props, Blunt/Loud acting, and Frightening makeup. Example of films- IT, Annabelle, and Us. Common sounds- Dialogue, Stings, and diegetic sound. The elements we like are the suspense and mystery because that engages the audience and entertained throughout the film. Also, the intense and dramatic background noise/music because it helps create suspension. The elements that do not appeal to us is the predictable and uniformed decisions the characters make like they hear a sound coming from the basement and they go there to see what it is. This usually means the characters are walking towards danger which the audience can expect what is going to happen next....

Genre Research- Drama

Image
    - Camera Movements Panning: This is used to show the characters and their surroundings especially in rising action or the climax when tension is high especially in a drama.  Tracking: This is used to add suspense and a tension      - Lighting Low-Key Lighting is used to build tension between characters which is a needed trade in dramas where there is usually a conflict between two or more characters.  Camera Angles High Shot Angles are used to demonstrate the lack of power in characters usually in a conflict.  Low Shot Angles are used to demonstrate the power a character or group of characters have in the situation.     - Elements of Drama External Conflict with another character Internal Conflict that only the audience sees  Tension, Anxiety, and Suspense in many Scenes      - Sounds Non-Diegetic: This is used to increase the effect of the action/dialogue of characters. Genres We would like to Research

Image
The three genres we are researching all play some sort of part in our short film. However, the first genre is the most important one for us.The first genre we will research for our short film is drama. We will research this genre because this is the main genre of our short film. Since our film involves a verbal abusive relationship between a mother and daughter this is more drama than any other genre. The next genre we will research is the second most important one to our film. The short film genre is the action genre. This short film contains a lot of action in it. The action in this film creates the dramatic effects of a toxic parent and child relationship. The action in our film would be yelling, doors slamming, etc to show exaggeration of the verbal abuse. This also plays a part in the drama genre. For this exact reason is why they are the main genres of our film. Both the drama and action genre play hand and hand in our film. Therefore, the action genre is...

Our Pitch- Short Film

Image
My partner Ciaya and I decided our short film will fall in action and/or dramatic genre. Our first pitch is a mother verbally abusing her daughter and her daughter goes to friend for support. Our second pitch is about a girl who's parents died in a car crash and got raised by a physically abusive cousin. Our third pitch is about a mother that works a lot and leaves her oldest to raise her 3 kids. I'm interested in making any of these a film because they are relatable issues that are occurring in teens lives. The pitch that was chosen is the toxic relationship between the mother and daughter with the daughter getting help from friends. We chose that because it'll be easier to film verbal abuse, easy casting, and the plot is easier to convey. Also, it is relatable topic within teen girls which my partner and I can connect to because we are both teen girls.
